Monchique is a small, colourful mountain town at the foot of the Foia and Picota mountains. A short, half-hour drive from the beaches of the Atlantic, it is home to traditional workshops, galleries and shops that sell sell wood, ceramic and embroidered handicrafts.
What To Do?
Walk the the windy alleyways, visit the remains of the 400 year old convent and hike to the top of the Big & Small sister mountains, Foia & Picota, or rent bikes for world- class down-hill, BTT, gentler cycling through the region's glorious cork-oak forests.
Walk this unique corner of the world right from Vila Foia's doorstep. As a designated ecological area, Monchique is blessed with many diverse micro-climates and rich flora and fauna that are best discovered on foot. For both the serious walker and the stroller, Vila Foia has selected a range of circular walks that take you into the forests and the mountain's uplands. Take a picnic and spend the day out in the fresh air or simply stretch your legs and work up an apetite en route to a restaurant.
